make space for Christ

The beauty of the Christmas season lies not only in the glittering decorations or the exchange of gifts, but in the profound meaning it carries - the birth of Jesus Christ. As we prepare to celebrate this joyous occasion, it is essential to reflect upon the actions of biblical characters who made space for Christ in their less than perfect circumstances. Doing so will inspire us to find ways to make space for Christ in our lives this Christmas season.

Mary and Joseph were chosen as Jesus Christ’s parents. They faced a lot of challenges as they embarked on their journey. Their path was not paved with comfort or abundance, but filled with uncertainty and trials. Yet, despite their less than ideal circumstances, they made space for Christ in their lives. Mary, young and unmarried, humbly accepted the angel's message and embraced her calling. Joseph, faced with a seemingly impossible situation, trusted in God's plan and willingly took Mary as his wife. Together, they made space in their hearts and lives for the Savior of the world.

This Christmas, we can follow Mary and Joseph’s example. We can by create space for Christ amidst our own imperfect circumstances. Whether it is through the busyness of our daily routines, the pressures of work or the distractions of modern life, it is crucial to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. We can do this by setting aside time for going to church, prayer, study, meditation, and reading Scripture. By intentionally carving out moments to connect with God, we create the space necessary for Him to work in our lives.

We can make space for Christ by cultivating an attitude of humility and surrender. Just as Mary willingly accepted the role given to her, we too can surrender our own plans and desires to align with God's will. This involves prioritizing acts of kindness, compassion, and mercy towards others. By loving our neighbors, serving those in need, and demonstrating forgiveness and understanding, we open our hearts to the transformative power of Christ's love.

Making space for Christ requires us to simplify our lives and focus on what truly matters. In a world that often values material possessions and instant gratification, we can choose to prioritize our relationship with God and our loved ones. By decluttering our lives from distractions and excessive consumerism, we create an atmosphere of peace and joy that allows Christ to enter and abide in our hearts.

This Christmas, let us look to the biblical examples of Mary and Joseph, who made space for Christ in their less than perfect circumstances. As we navigate the complexities of our lives, may we emulate their humility and surrender, and intentionally prioritize our relationship with God and our loved ones. May we simplify our lives and focus on what truly matters. In doing so, we invite Christ to be present in our hearts, making this Christmas a season of true joy, peace, and divine connection.
